Default Inserting citations using the reference function in Microsoft Word 2007?

I'm working on an assignment that requires in-text citing and a reference list. I created a bibliography using ISO 690 format that lists all of my references in a numerical list, which I want. However, when it comes time to insert citations directly in the text, whichever reference I insert, and no matter how many references I insert, the reference number comes out to 4, as opposed to the number given in the reference list generated by the program. Does anyone know if Word can automatically link in-text citations with the number on the reference list, or does it have to be done manually?
