Default Caption Order: Figure 4 Figure 3 Figure 2

I have three figures, pictures, running across the page, When I use the insert caption on the left picture it inserts Figure 2, which is correct as I have an additional figure earlier in the document. Then when I use insert caption on the middle picture, it goes in as Figure 2, and the picture on the left goes to Figure 3; then when I go to the right most picture and add a caption for it, it goes to Figure 2, Figure 2 (middle photo) changes to Figure 3 and the left photo changes to Figure 4.

They were inserted into the document, left, middle, right. So Word even appears to be ignoring the order in which they were inserted as well as the fact that they are being captioned in "reverse order" as 4, 3, 2 instead of 2, 3, 4.

Frustration is setting in.

Please help.

Default Figure 4, Figure 3, Figure 2

I posted as a reply on another thread then noticed the thread was posted as solved, so I thought I might need to start a new one so people would notice and respond, so here it is.

Assuming that Text Wrapping for the pictures is not "In line with text," Word creates a text box for each caption. Caption numbering will depend on the relative positions of text box anchors in the document.

Click the ¶ button on the Home tab to display nonprinting marks. Select a caption and note where the anchor symbol displays. Drag the anchor so that it is in a separate paragraph from other anchors and in the logical order. Finally, update caption fields, for example by switching to Print Preview and back, you can use Ctrl+F2 followed by ESC.

This is liable to occur if your images are floating (i.e. not formatted as in-line with text). In such cases the caption gets inserted into a textbox and their numbering order is determined by the textbox anchor orders. When multiple textboxes get anchored to the same paragraph it can be difficult to control this. The better approach is to insert the pictures into tables in the in-line format, along with their captions. You can give the tables text wrapping so they'll behave the same as pictures with square/tight wrapping.

For a macro to do this, see: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word-...html#post58886

See the other thread you also started on this topic. Avoid posting the same question repeatedly.

I've merged the threads. Please don't resurrect old threads - or make multiple posts/threads on the same topic.
