Default Link substitution

I have a design document that has many images pasted to the document. Very often the same image is pasted in multiple places in the document. If i have to update that image i have to go to all the locations in the document to replace the image with the new one.

Is there a way to paste the image once in one location in the document and everywhere else where i need to see the image just create a "live" link. Images is only pasted once. Everywhere else in the document the image is dynamically displayed from the one place it was pasted.

Thanks

The [Insert] button in the "Insert picture" dialogue* is a pulldown, offering
  • insert
  • link to file
  • insert and link
I've heard horror stories about documents where one fine day all the links fall off, and I don't find Word's options for managing linked graphics particularly convincing … but YMMD: see if one of the link options does what you want.

I entirely agree with you that using a link is the way to handle repeated graphics; and in my usual environment I have never, ever pasted in a graphic. Working with links makes it a snip to check what graphics have been referenced in the document, and instantly updates the document when I need to change the graphic.

* at least, that's the way it is in 2010

If the image is pasted in-line, you can quite easily bookmark one, then simply insert cross-references to the image wherever else you require it to appear. If you update the image within the bookmark, Pressing Ctrl-A, F9 will update all the others too. As eNGiNe says, linking to an external source file you can change means you don't even need to edit the document directly. Again, you can bookmark and cross-reference the linked image.
