As with Charles' sample document, your document has the page # formatted with a '\* roman' switch, which Word doesn't do if you use the header's page # format dialogue.
Delete the page # field, insert a new one using the 'Page Number' tool on the 'Header & Footer Tools' tab, then click on the dropdown there and use the 'Format page numbers' option to select the required format. Then exit the header and update your TOC.

Hi Paul,
I swear that I am using page number insert popups, I am not inventing my own page numbering. I selected Roman 3 (right margin version), how can I go wrong? Can you fix it in the attached document and reattach it? Thanks. I |

I repeat: I did not enter EVER, EVER \* roman.
I only clicked on Roman 3 from the page number tool. If someone would fix it in the test document, I can copy it over to my book document. Thanks. |

OK, here is your document, BUT:
you cannot copy this format from one document to another.

Instead of using TOP OF PAGE, Roman 3 from the page number tool,
I used FORMAT PAGE NUMBER, I, II, III, ... Results: TOC OK, but the page number is invisible on page headers. Document attached. |

It looks like you've deleted the page# field. Simply reinsert one with no formatting applied (eg access the header and press Ctrl-F9 and type 'PAGE' between the braces so that you end up with {PAGE}, then press F9 to update.

CTRL F9 does not do anything.
I have the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard (split in the middle). |

What did you have selected when you pressed Ctrl-F9? The keyboard style is of no consequence.

After removing the page number and inserting it again, just before getting a nervous breakdown over it, it started working.
The code reads as: { PAGE \* ROMAN \* MERGEFORMAT } Thanks all for the help. |
