How to create a Dependent Drop-Down Picklist
Hi all,
I’m in search of a way to add a dependent drop-down pick list in word. I have a template which contains pick lists. But I need to create a set of three dependent pick lists and hope someone can help me. For example, the first list would list a type of vehicle: Fruit, Vegetable, and Meat. If I selected Vegetable on the first pick list then the next list would limit my options to a list of types of vegetables, maybe Tomatoes, Carrots, and Broccoli. And finally, if I had selected Tomatoes on the second list then the last list would be limited to Cherry Tomatoes Beefsteak Tomatoes and Plum Tomatoes. Is anyone aware of how to create these kinds of Dependent lists in Microsoft Word, or at least to place this kind of dependent list in a Microsoft Word Template? Thanks in advance for the ideas! |

Pick Lists
This is all I saw in my Help for Word 2003. Have you tried MS Excel? It may be better for your purposes since you can create lists and filters.
Add, remove, or change the order of items in a drop-down list 1. Open the template (template: A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) that contains the form (form: A document that contains fill-in blanks, or form fields, in which you enter information. For example, you can create an online registration form in Microsoft Word that uses drop-down lists from which users can select entries.) you want to change. 2. Remove protection from the form template by clicking Protect Form on the Forms toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.). 3. Double-click the drop-down form field (form field: In a form, a location where a particular type of data, such as a name or address, is stored.) you want to change. 4. Do any one of the following, and then click OK:
6. Protect the form by clicking Protect Form on the Forms toolbar. Note The first item in the Items in drop-down list box is the one that appears by default in the drop-down list. To move the most frequently selected item to the first position, use the Move arrow buttons. |

Thanks for the tips, mkh1958.
Actually, I'm familiar with the use of the drop-down list that you forwarded to me. I was hoping there was a MSWord function that would allow dependent lists. I went ahead and added an excel field in the word document as a means of providing users with a group of dependent drop-downs. It's not quite as stable as I would like, but it does the job. If anyone else happens to know of a way of doing the same with a Word Forum instead of with an excel insert I'd love to hear about it. Thanks! |
