Default Adding Office Tools to Word 2000 SR1a

I have Word 2000 SR1a installed on a XP64 system.

I noticed that the Spell Checking option is greyed out. After some investigation I found that Office Tools is not installed.

I tried to add it from Office 2000 CD, but it won't let me because SR1a is a later version.

I tried to add it with the SR1a install, but it does not allow me to install components, it just says I already have the version installed.

I don't want to uninstall Sr1a, install from CD then reinstall SR1a, which has all sorts of fixes applied.

Is there any way for me to fix this? Install Office Tools manually, use an external spell checker, anything that would work.

If you go into "Add/Remove Programs" applet in the Windows Control Panel and select Office 2000, you should get the option to modify the installation. Tell it you want to add the proofing tools, then insert the Office 2000 CD if/when prompted.

Thank you.

It goes into calculating disk space with an hourglass and gets stuck there.
It does not complete, there is no error message.

Maybe you need to do a repair installation. This is especially so if the proofing tools were working before.

Well, I rebooted the system and tried again.

This time it worked but said that the feature was not available on the CDROM. Does Office 2000 have more than one CD? If so, I don't have it.

I am reluctanf to repair because it may reinstall all sorts of features that I worked hard to get rid of, plus there are fixes applied.

What does Repair do?

I checked and indeed Repair is SR1 even though the installed version is SR1a so it'll probably lose me SR1a

Office 2000 came with 2 CDs (in the Premium version anyway), but AFAIK CD1 has everything you need for Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint, at least, and that includes the proofing tools. A repair won't undo any of the updates/customizations that you've applied (unless they've broken something, which none of the updates does - except that SR1a had to fix some flaws in SR1). Until I recently stopped using it, I never had any problem with using the Office 2000 repair function (which is also available via Help|Detect & Repair).

You certainly won't lose SR1a as a result of a repair. In any event, why aren't you using SP3?

Well, it looks into the CD and finds DATA1.MSI, but then it says the feature is not available on the CD.

What do you mean "use" SP3? Can it add the Office Tools? I tink it's installed.

Also, I only have word installed and nothing else out of Office. I also cleaned
a lot of Office stuff that is unnecessary. I am pretty sure the Repair will bring it back and I don't want that.

I just want to add Office Tools to Word, but the damn thing says it's not on the CD.

SP3 = Service Pack 3 - two major updates later than what you're now using.

I'm curious, though, about these SR1a problems you're having. Did you install Office 2000 from your pre-SR1a CD or from a SR1a CD?

If you uninstalled the unwanted features via the "Add/Remove Programs" applet in the Windows Control Panel, then a repair won't reinstall them. If you removed them by some other means, a repair may reinstall them - so that you can uninstall them the correct way and not break anything...

It was not an uninstall, but a cleanup. I wanted strictly Word without any Office leftovers.

But this may be moot, because if it does not find Office Tools on the CD, it won't install it even after Repair.

Unless you did your 'cleanup' via the "Add/Remove Programs" applet in the Windows Control Panel, then whatever you did has probably broken some key feature of the installation. this may also account for the difficulties the installer is now having finding the proofing tools. In that case, I'd recommend using System Restore to revert your system to the state in was in before you started the cleanup, then do it the proper way - the "Add/Remove Programs" applet.

OK, I had an unrelated problem with Windows installer and I had to fix it, so I thought that would fix this problem too.

Now when I try to add Office Tools I get error 1731: The Source installation package for the product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium is out of sync with the client package. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package.

I googled it and apparently the problem is usually that the version of Office installed is different than the one on the CD. I dk how that is possible, but I really don't want to uninstall Word and reinstall. So I will bite the bullet and try to repair it first. That will dump a lot of Office unnecessary stuff that I really don't want, but I guess I'll have to tolerate it.

Regarding SP3, my recollection is that I slipstreamed it after SR1a. If I reapply it do you think it may fix 1731?
