Default Doc v Docx

Hi !,

I think I know the answer to my problem after reading some of the Posts here but it would be nice if someone could confirm.

I was made redundant a year ago and have been submitting my CV in a Word 2007 docx format to various job vacancies.
I was surprised by the lack of response to those I knew I was particularly suited to and the alarm bells started ringing when one of the Agencies asked me to submit my CV (which I already had in docx format) as a Word document, another Agency on-line form application stated it only accepted doc or rtf formats when I tried to attach my docx CV.

I can only imagine one of two scenarios for the total lack of interest in my CV, either:

1. The Employers cannot access my CV due to their earlier versions of Word and don't even need to bother to try due to the vast number of people applying for a single job or......

2. My CV says I'm rubbish & unemployable !

Many thanks......

Frustrated

Hi Frustrated,

Pretty well any word-processing app that can read a docx file can read a doc file. The converse isn't necessarily true, though. Word 2003 & earlier, for example, need to have a converter installed before they can read docx files.

I can imagine staff in some agencies taking the attitude that if they can't read your CV, that's your problem - not theirs...

Personally, If I wanted to ensure my CV was readable no matter what word-processing software the recipient uses, I'd send it as a PDF; which also means the layout remains as intended. Almost everyone has a PDF reader.

Hi Paul (and many thanks for your speedy reply),

I guessed the lack of response was due to the non-ability of the Employers to access my CV (and a bit of my ego probably wants to believe this too!)

I've now defaulted my Word to automatically save in the 2003 or lesser version of Word and hope that sorts the problem, now all I have to do is wait for all the job offers to roll in ?

A good example of "joined-up" thinking on the part of Microsoft there.....NOT!

Many thanks....

Frustrated.

Hi Frustrated,

I'm not sure what your comment
Quote:
"joined-up" thinking on the part of Microsoft
is meant to imply. With Office 2007, MS moved away from using proprietary file formats (for which it had long been criticised) to open, XML-based file formats. Doing so necessarily means that older versions of Office couldn't read the new format. To overcome that limitation, MS made file converters for the previous Office versions available for free, so that the older software could work with the new format. If any business now claims to be unable to read the new files, after the converters have been available and proven for five years, that suggests those businesses have some serious staff/IT issues to address. MS is hardly to blame for that.
