Default Microsoft Word has stopped working

I am having the following problems with Word 2007.
  • The error (Title) appears in a dialog box whenever I exit Word.
  • Click to open a Word doco and an empty word screen is displayed.
  • File|Open a Word doco and it is displayed but is not editable
  • Start a new Word doco and I can edit & save but the error occurs when I close. I then can't modify the doco like the others.
This problem started after Windows Update started and installed KB 959108, 957321 & 959130. I was in the middle of editing a Word doco when this happened. After the auto restart I could not modify any existing Word docos. Excel appears to be working fine. The computer and Office are 5 mths old.

Please help. What do I need to do to fix this?

I suggest to uninstall your copy of MS Office and then install it again. Running MS Office Repair can also solve your problem.

I recently started having the same problems with Word 2007:

-Click to open a Word document and an empty word screen is displayed.
-File-Open a Word document and it is displayed but is not editable
-Close document "Word has stopped working" error occurs
-Cannot scroll with mouse, only with arrow keys on document

My problems also began immediately after Windows Update. After the auto restart I could not modify the open document. My Excel appears to be working fine also. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks mikeyellob for the suggestion to reinstall. Unfortunately this did not work.
Fortunately , after the latest release of Microsoft updates that were sent out, the problem went away. Looks like they realised and fixed it.

Gee I was hoping Microsoft Word would have improved, but it sounds like it still has problems where it doesn't work. I am trying to learn Word 2007; I have 2003 on my computer now....

Default Fix for Word 2007 crashing after update

I had the exact same problem as Extraordinaire, and this worked:

1. Open up Regedit. (Go to Start and type "regedit" in the search field and press enter.)

2. In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\W ord\Data

3. Right mouse click on the "Data" folder and rename it "xData" (you can delete it but this way you can change it back).

4. Open up Word, close it, and voila, problem solved.

I had all the same problems. When I renamed the data file as instructed, Word 2007 functions as normal.
