How to update the numbering of table lines
Hi, I use a document template which has sections for the rooms of a property. Each section has a table for the room info, and each table line has a column for a unique number.
These line numbers are entered as a numbered list, so if I insert an extra line in a table the line numbers update automatically. Also the numbers pick up at the start of a room where they left off in the previous one (e.g. if the last line in the 3rd room was number 53, the first line in the 4th room will be number 54). So, here's the problem - when I get to a job, I change the order of these room sections depending on the layout of the property. This messes up my numbered list, and I have to right click the first number of each room and select "continue numbering" to correct it. This is annoying and time consuming - is there a way to correct the list in one go? I tried Ctrl+A and then F9 to update fields, but that didn't work. Also after changing the order I seem unable to select the whole numbered list - it breaks down into separate sections depending on which rooms were moved and which weren't. All help much appreciated, thank you |

Did you try pressing just ALT+F9 after tables were rearranged?

I had not, just attempted this and it obliterated all my numbered sequences, page numbers, table of contents etc. Lucky I have a backup!
EDIT: Actually it seemed to switch Word to some other mode which meant all that stuff wouldn't display, when I pressed it again everything came back |

Did it reappear in the right order?

That's because Alt-F9 wasn't the correct thing to use (that just toggles Word's field code display on/off). The advice should have been to use Ctrl-A, F9.

Very strange, for me using Word 2016 Ctrl F9 inserts/toggles field codes and Alt F9 updated the numbering sequence. The scenarios Alt F9 worked for me in renumbering was:
1. created a table, numbered the first column, then split the table adding text in between. 2. created 4 separate tables, numbered the first column of each using the continue numbering, adding text in between. Where it didn't work was when I took tables from the two different scenarios above. It did renumber them but kept the two numbering sequences and wouldn't combine the two numbering sequences. Which I would suppose is the solution to this issue. How do we look at all tables and combine numbering sequences? |

For the record Kilroy, after pressing Alt F9 a second time things just switch back to how they were, the numbering does not update.
Cheers for the additional input macro, unfortunately Ctrl-A F9 doesn't work- it updates my table of contents, and also updates my sequence fields, but not the table line numbers. Here is a screenshot - the numbers 23 & 24 near the top are part of a sequence field and those update fine. The "En Suite Bathroom" heading is of a section I moved from near the end of the doc to near the start - you can see how the line numbers re-start from 1. The section following this one ("Living Room") continues its numbering from the section preceding it ("Hallway"). If I select those numbers, only those from "En Suite Bathroom" are highlighted. If I select the equivalent ones elsewhere in the doc, the line numbers of the whole doc are highlighted *apart* from "En Suite Bathroom" - so its as if moving sections is causing the document to then treat them separately. Does anyone know how to prevent this (or easily counteract it)? |

...so just to update, I fixed it!
I'm not sure entirely what was wrong but I just kind of re-entered the numbered list one section at a time and made sure all the formatting was standard etc. Now it works. Maybe there was something buggy in there before, who knows. Anyway thanks for your efforts guys |
