Table numbering not updating correctly
I am using automatic table numbering in my thesis. I just discovered that the first two tables are both labeled Table 1, both in the table captions and in the corresponding list of tables at the beginning of the document. I'm pretty sure this wasn't always the case... The rest of the tables proceed with their numbering correctly. Anyway, I toggled the field codes and they were identical ({SEQ Table \* ARABIC \s 1}), so as far as I can tell the tables are part of the same sequence. What else could be causing this to happen? I have selected all and chosen "Update Field" several times, to no avail. Please let me know if there is any other info I need to post to help figure this out. Thanks!

Have you updated the fields, via Ctrl-A, F9? Is either of the problem captions in a textbox?

Yes, but the updating didn't do anything. The second Table 1 is in the first row of my table, though it's not in a text box (all subsequent table captions were copied and pasted into their first rows because all the tables are multi-page tables and I needed a way for table captions to be on each page without incrementing when it was still the same table).

Without actually seeing the problem document, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive), say, just the top two rows from the first three tables, including their captions? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

All you need do is delete the \s 1 switches from your SEQ fields; your document has multiple paragraphs in the 'Heading 1' Style and the \s 1 switches instruct the SEQ field to re-start numbering after the next 'Heading 1' paragraph.

Do I do that by just toggling the field codes, then manually deleting that switch and reupdating the document?

Basically, yes. Indeed, if you toggle the field code display 'on', you can use Find/Replace, where:
Find = ARABIC \s 1 Replace = ARABIC (just in case there's other '\s 1' content in your document (personally, I'd use F/R to delete all of ' \* ARABIC \s 1 ', as it's not needed).

That suggests you did something wrong with the F/R. When I do so, I end up with a field coded as:
{ SEQ Table \* ARABIC } or: { SEQ Table } depending on which F/R I use, and all the fields will then update correctly. Most likely, you used the first F/R but forgot to include ARABIC as the replace expression. That will result in the error message: Error! Switch argument not specified.
