Copying text into multiple cells at once
I've created a table in Word and I want to copy an 'X' from one cell into several cells in a different column. When I try this it messes up the formatting and doesn't put the X in all the cells I selected. It really doesn't seem to follow any logic at all in fact. What am I doing wrong? Or does Word just not do this?

Select just the 'x' and not the of the whole of the cell. CTRL+C. Select the target cells CTRL+V to paste.
