Break in table keeps coming back
I have a fairly long table, about 340 rows (3 columns) which is a list of acronyms we use at work. For some reason, I keep getting a break between the same 2 rows near the middle of the table, well above where the page break should be. This has been going on for months.
About a month ago, I decided to clean-up and reformat the table, and finally track down and remove the unwanted break. What a nightmare! At first I tried deleting the page break, but when Word wants you to have a page break, it certainly won't let you, a mere user, remove it! I spend a few hours googling for unwanted page breaks in Word, and found literally dozens of fixes. I tried many of them, and finally, one worked (I don't remember what it was now) and the unwanted break disappeared. For a while. A few days later, it reappeared. I got an entirely different suggestion from a co-worker, which involved clicking and dragging a mysterious little box that appeared to the right of the table on special occasions. I still have no idea what those special occasions are, but clicking and dragging down on the little box removed the unwanted break, for a while. A few days later, it was back, and the mysterious box was no where to be found. (BTW, this box does not show when I click on the paragraph indicator display button.) I started hunting for another cause, and eventually noticed that the column was set wider than the page (I didn't set it that way, Word did), and when I reset the column width, the break went away. For a while. The break reappeared shortly after. The margins were ok and the mysterious little box was on vacation, so I started looking elsewhere. I notice that one of the column widths was set to over 100% (I didn't set it there, Word did). I decided to set it to 100%, and that fixed the problem. For a while. Today, the break is there again. The margins are ok, the columns had gone just a hair over 100%, and I readjusted them. The break remained. The mysterious little box made a surprise guest appearance, but dragging it down only scared it off again. The break remains. I have now probably spent at least one work day trying to get rid of this page break, and am very frustrated. It has just occurred to me to move the acronym table into Excel, which does tables very well and very stable. Before I give up on Word tables entirely, I thought I'd post this history here so you know what I've already tried, or at least most of it. I'm open to suggestions. |

Your page breaks are quite possibly the result of paragraphs in the cells following the page break being formatted as 'keep with next' and/or 'keep together'. Similarly, having rows formatted with the 'allow to break across pages' attribute unchecked could also be a factor.
