Default Publisher bogging down with long document

I am using MS Publisher 2013 on a Windows 10 machine. The document is over 300 pages long and includes a lot of graphics. It is currently about 60 MB in size. It is constantly "bogging down" when I go to do things. It will stall and I will have to wait for it to "come out of it" before I can continue. (It hasn't crashed yet. So far it always recovers, but I am keeping my fingers crossed!) I checked my system resources and the problem doesn't seem to be my computer. The memory usage stays in the 40% to 50% range even when the program is balking. The CPU usage fluctuates between 0-35%. So it doesn't seem that the problem is that the computer doesn't have the resources for it. Is the Publisher program itself not able to handle a large document? What can I do? It may get a whole lot bigger before I am done.
