Default Newbie Working Time Problem

As a newbie to Project, I am having difficulty with my calendar working time.

My project has some task that operate under a normal work week with others operating on 24 hour basis. When I change the calendar on an individual task from the default Standard calendar to the 24 Hour Calendar, if appears to me Project uses the work times from the Standard calendar to display the duration of the task on the Gantt diplay. That is, a task that is entered as 3 days only displays as one day (I assume (Yes, I know what assuming does. But it's just me in this case.) the one day is the result of the 1:3 relationship in the working hours in a workday in the Standard Calendar versus the 24 Hour Calendar).

Might someone shed some light on how to get my project to honor the two different workdays?

Hi
If you are trying to change calendars AFTER you have entered tasks then this is part of your problem and a problem that a lot of people have encountered (including me). First you ned to set up a blank mpp file and change the calendars to suit. Only once you have done that should you start entering tasks.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
Tony

Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll give it a try and post when I have the results.

Otherwise, does the forum know of work-around suitable for an existing mmp?

I tried your suggestion without success. To flesh is out, this is what I did.
  1. Created a new mmp
  2. In that mmp, I create a new Calendar as a copy of "24 Hours" named "Operations" using the Changing Working Time window
  3. Made minor customization to "Operations" in the form of an exception day for Christmas
  4. Saved the changes by clicking "OK"
  5. Entered a few tasks with the default calendar "Standard (Project Calendar)"
  6. Entered a few tasks with the default calendar "Standard (Project Calendar)" then changed the default calendar to my "Operations" calendar
  7. Entered the duration of the tasks with the "Operations" calendar
This brought the same results. A three day task entered using the "Operation" calendar is represented by a Gantt chart bar of one day despite the Duration column for the task indicating three days. What is likely a simple solution does not appear to fit my definition of "intuitive". All I need is someone to set me on the righteous path of Microsoft Project intuition. I am not comfortable investing more time on this project with this software until I can resolve the seemingly basic problem.

Hi
Make sure you have applied a resource to the task otherwise it WILL only show as one day on the Gantt bars.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
