Excel linked dates and Tasks not respecting Successor Links
Hi all, I am having trouble with tasks not following the rules of Predecessors/ Successors when Linking the dates of tasks with date cells in Excel. There a 3 separate parts of my project, each with 5 tasks which are linked as finish to start. The parts of the project are samples being sent to my department. These are manually scheduled and linked to an Excel sheet so the other departments can update the cell with the date they will arrive and it will automatically update the Project chart. There are two tasks that need to be completed before the samples arrive (I'll call them Pre Tasks) which are scheduled to Start ALAP and two tasks which are to be completed after the samples arrive (Post tasks) which are scheduled to start ASAP, all of which are automatically scheduled. These make up the 5 tasks for each of the 3 samples and should move depending on the middle task (the sample being received) which is manually scheduled and linked to Excel. The issue I am having is that the the two Pre Tasks for the first and second samples have a start date later than the manually scheduled Sample task. There is no reason for this! They have no other influences other than there Successor (the sample task), which they ignore, and are completely independent of one another. I have no idea why! I made the Excel link by copy, past special and text data and it updates in Project when I update the cell in Excel. I have made sure the project start date isn't impacting upon any tasks and have tried changing to a project end date instead. This resulted in the Post tasks moving to before the Sample tasks. Basically the same issue in revers. Has anyone else had this issue and can you tell me how to rectify it? It will be very much appreciated. Thanks. Regards, David P.S. I tried to upload the Project but was unable to. It seems it is saving itself as 2007 instead of 2010. It seems it may have transferred over setting from 2007 during the install and the advice is to reinstall it. I'll do this and let you know if it fixes my original issue. Fingers crossed.... |

I reinstalled it which fixed the 2007/2010 issue but the original issue with the tasks not respecting there Successor was sill there. I have found another way though. I have had to make the Sample delivery date a summary task. For some reason the Pre tasks then respect the link to the Post tasks. Looks a bit messier but it is a work around which works. If anyone knows what the original issue was please let me know. Thanks.

I've answered your post on the Tek Tips page.
http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1759904 I don't think changing the linked tasks to a summary "fixed" the issue. Summary tasks are autoscheduled (not manually scheduled) and that may have temporarily resolved the issue. Paste links are reknown for breaking - I'd take your approach very carefully. |
