Default Relative Maximum End Date.

Hi

I want to set up a task that lasts 7 days, and can be started up to 60 days after it's predecessor.

Can this be done without setting an actual date (relative).

I'm currently trying not to hard-set any date, because I want the whole project to be movable, by using indentation.

The duration of the task should be 7 days. No trouble there.

The issue is the "up to 60 days after it's predecessor". By default the task will have an ASAP constraint, and assuming the link relationship is Finish to Start, it will be initially scheduled to start immediately after the predecessor. You can certainly place a deadline or constraint on the task to ensure you are alerted if the task slides past the deadline.

I hope this helps.

Hi Julie

Setting a deadline on the task forces it to have a date defined, and that doesn't allow me to move the project around.

This is what I did (See image: http://screencast.com/t/rbKr4tSutVL). I've set a subproject that lasts 60 days, and with a child milestone that is set to start on "As Late as Possible"

What do you think?

Ah, I see you are using manually scheduled tasks. Firstly, yes setting a deadline does set a date -- but the Move Project command will also you to move the entire project and maintain the relative deadline.

Be aware that "setting a date" through automatically scheduled tasks still allows you to move tasks -- the issue is setting date constraints by typing in dates. If the duration of task 9 increases, the start of task 12 (successor) will change automatically.

Task number 10 right now is aligning with the finish of the summary task -- but the summary tasks duration has been manually entered. Why should it take 60 days if the only true subtask is 3 days in duration?

Are you trying to say that task 9 only is 3 days of work but you want to allow 60 days to complete it?

Hi Julie

Thank you for your kind help. I know Excel, Word, and PowerPoint but I'm very new to Project.

Task 9 lasts 3 days, and I have up to 60 days, starting from the end of task 4 to complete it. "Fin Plazo" means "Deadline".

I think I will use hard-set dates and "Move project".

Thanks!

An option for your statement"

is to create a Finish to start relationship with a 60 day lag between task 9 and task 4. This will allow Task 9 to adjust 60 days relative to the completion of Task 4. I would still set a deadline on Task 9 just so you are alerted if it starts to slip.

You are very welcome for the assistance.

Project is quite different than any other Office product and has a bit of a learning curve. There are some pretty good how to videos (free) from the folks at Microsoft. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/project/en-us/2010-videos.aspx

to get you started.

Feel free to drop by with more questions as needed. Good luck.

Julie
