Default Internet Explorer 9 changes .pps to .ppt on download

When I receive a .pps slideshow file in an e-mail, it opens and plays without problem .. as do the .pps files I have in my computer.
However, when I try to download a .pps file from a Website page, ( using Internet Explorer 9 ) a screen pops up asking "What do you want to do with the ****.ppt ?"
Open / Save or Save as
The only way I can get it to open and play as a slideshow .. and not in my PowerPoint editing program .. is to change the newly named .ppt extension and save it as a pps. file.
Why is this happening please? Other browsers I have on my system are still opening and playing downloaded .pps files in slideshow format without problem.
Any help will be gratefully received.

Default Correction to problem

Having experimented more .. I see that it is NOT Windows 7 which is at fault .. it is Internet Explorer 9 which changes the pps files to ppt.
If I use Firefox, Opera or Chrome .. all display a downloaded slideshow in .pps format correctly as normal.
Has anyone any comments please ?
