Codec Unavailable
Hi all -
I'm teaching a German class at my job and am storing a series of PowerPoints on a google drive for my students. The audio (which I think worked previously before putting them on google drive) now says either "codec unavailable" or "media unavailable." My two goals are: 1. To have my students be able to download these from Google drive and listen to them. I.e., fix the broken audio tracks 2. Learn how to properly add sound to future PPTs I create to avoid this issue. I'm attaching an example PPT I'm having trouble with. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7...HhFWU0xeDl0Q28 Seth |

The audio tracks play OK when the presentatation is opened in PowerPoint 2016 on my PC, but I use my PC for audio work and it has the appropriate codec installed.
Missing codecs usually suggest a localised issue relating to the type of audio file in question. The format of the files used in your presentation is M4A, for which Windows does not supply a codec by default. You can download a suitable codec, but that will only affect your PC, or you could convert the audio files to a format that is available to be played by default such as WAV or MP3 and insert them in that format. If you have any problems converting the files, contact me via my web site.

Follow up question - how were you able to tell that my files were m4a? I am able to click on the speaker icon to expose my playback formatting options, but I can't seem to view the actual file itself. I assume I need to do this so I can download it to convert?

Powepoint files are essentially zip files. If you open the file with an application that can handle zips, (or temporarily change the extension to zip and use Windows File Explorer), you will find the audio files in a sub folder called Media.
Or you could use http://www.gmayor.com/extract_images_from_word.htm to extract the files to your hard drive (note that this add-in extracts all media files not just images - I may make it more selective in a future update, but for the moment it will do the job).

The above instruction did the trick! Changed the extension to zip and it put everything in a folder for me. Thanks!
