Switching from POP3 to IMAP
I am in the process of replacing an old XP machine running Office 2007 with a new Win 10 machine running Office 2016. In the process, I want to be able to get email on my iPhone and iPad. I talked to a tech guy who told me to switch the PCs from POP3 to IMAP. He said that with POP3, the emails are physically downloaded from the server, so whichever device gets to them first will be the only one that can see them. With IMAP, all devices leave them on the server and download a copy. And any changes made on one device are reflected on all devices.
Question #1: Is this accurate? Is IMAP the way to go for what I want. When I bought the new machine, I set it up like the old one, as POP3. Unfortunately, this caused the two machines to get out of sync. I now have some emails on the new machine that are not on the old one. Question #2: Is there a way for me to get the two back in sync? That is, can I get the emails that are only on the new machine onto the old one and vice versa? Question #3: What is the best way to convert to IMAP? Should I disconnect the machines from the Internet while making the switch so that they don't go get more emails that then have to be synced manually? Question #4: Finally, any tips on how to set up the iPhone & iPad? Thanks |
