Default Attachments display differently

I don't know what software update contained this change - it's pretty recent, though, within the past few months.

When I receive an email attachment for any Microsoft file type, it displays as a "print preview" or something, NOT as an editable file. Furthermore, it displays at full screen, and obscures the email message so you have to spend unnecessary keystrokes to either minimize the display, or click View>Edit Document (which isn't even an intuitive place to put "Edit") to see the content in the actual application (it doesn't display at full screen then) in order to get back to the message.

I created a macro in Word to display the document as editable with a couple of (unnecessary) keystrokes, but you can't do that with PowerPoint.

Is there a setting somewhere that will allow me to turn this feature off so my attachments display the way they always have (which is, arguably the way they're "supposed" to display), in the application, and all ready to edit?

Thanks!
