Default Microsoft Outlook folders cannot be opened

I've got the "cannot start microsoft outlook. the set of folders cannot be opened. the operation failed."
I did this myself by trying to add a new email address and something I did (can't remember) and consequently, I can't get into Outlook 2013.

I've opened a new Profile but even importing the backed up PST file, I've lost all my email addresses.
If I go to my old Profile and click on it, then properties, I see all my email addresses there.
If I create a new Profile and import my my backed up PST, which I have done, how can I get my email addresses back into this new profile?

Ok, since I've got so many replies on this one, permit me to say I've fixed this myself.

Did you set the newly created Outlook Profile as Default?
Are you sure that you've removed your current profile completely after you say that you've created a new Outlook Profile successfully?

Thank you for the reply. I have set the new Profile as Default. I still have the old(er) profile there. So am I understanding you correctly to say it should be removed?
Also, I notice in my on the left, underneath my email addresses that which is called Outlook Data File. When I right click on it and go to Open File Location, it takes me to my new profile. So am I correct in assuming that should be left alone? I see an option when I right click again "close outlook data file." If I were to close that, will it just disappear from where it is without actually disturbing my Profile or will it cause an exciting disaster?
