I can't use live.com as a domain for a Microsoft Account.
This is written in the first person, but in fact, I'm writing this on behalf of my daughter.
I'll tell you my story, but I'm pretty sure that I'm making a mistake somewhere along the line, so don't be surprised when you run across it, then see if you can straighten me out. My local mail handler is Outlook 2007, running under Windows 7 SP1. I have six email accounts in the family, all using email addresses with the domain live.com. There are occasions when my PC is incapacitated or otherwise unavailable, and I want to do some email activity at the server. This presented no problem before the Microsoft Account (MA) came on the scene, and I could just log in to live.com. Now I have to create an MA for each of the six accounts, using an email address and a password. Once that is done, when I log in to Outlook.com, it will take me to an email page that corresponds to the email address I used to create the MA. Naturally, with thousands of email messages on file and a correspondingly large number of people who communicate with me using the live.com domain, I need to continue using that same domain; however, the system won't let me create an MA for live.com, because that is a "reserved domain". If everything I said here is correct, then it is impossible for me to do any work at the server. Please tell me where I'm wrong and how to get what I need. |

Not a problem anymore. I got help in a chat with a Microsoft agent, and after a long session of not knowing what each other was talking about, something happened and I got what I wanted, namely the ability to go to our six email accounts at the server!
The only remaining mystery is that I can access these accounts by going through LastPass, but for the time being only via Internet Explorer, but not via Firefox. Since I have something that works, I'm in no hurry to solve this mystery, but I am curious and I'll pursue it in due time. It's probably an add-on missing in Firefox or something like that. Unless someone has an idea about the mystery, this thread is closed. |
