Default Outlook .pst file

I am using Outlook 2002. I am concerned about the size of my .pst file (1.4GB). I just archived all of my e-mail form 2002 to 2008 into separate folders for backup. Under my list of folders in Outlook I closed the archived folder list so it is longer showing. I saved my backup and it is still showing the same size as before after archiving 7 years of e-mails. I expected to see a smaller .pst file after archiving all of those years of e-mail. Does anyone understand what is going on?
Thanks, Ken
