Default Back And Forward Commands

Does Microsoft plan to support the Back and Forward hyperlink navigation commands in future versions of office? They exist in Office 2003 and 2007 and support navigation to various Office products. Their use increases productivity significantly.

My problem is I am getting ready to recommend how we create and maintain information for business process, requirements, changes, etc and I need to recommend a robust and efficient process to support documentation. The Back and Forward commands are a significant consideration. When I look at Office For Mac 2011, these commands are no longer supported. I don't know the justification behind the decision to leave these commands out but if that is the direction of Microsoft, I will have to take that into consideration in my recommendations.

If you can shed some light on this concern, I would appreciate it. Thanks,

Hi lweinreich,

Have you checked whether they're available for adding to the Quick Access Toolbar? That's the normal way of implementing them in Word 2007 and 2010.

Default Back And Forward Commands

Thank you for your response. Yes, that was the first place I checked. I use Word 2007. When I moved from Word 2003, the commands were no longer in web options. They were moved to the All Commands list in the customizable tool bar. I had acces to Word 2010. They are also in the All Commands list.

I had success in using Word to document processes as use cases, etc. The ability to drill down and return from the point of invocation provided a mechanism to describe business requirements in business terms and to change to technical terms when drilling down to technical requirements, test scripts, etc. The benefit was significant for me during analysis of new requirements, changing requirements and even those questions when several years down the road people ask when and why was something changed. The productivity gain was recognized and emulated by others.

To retain this type of productivity of documenting processes in a service architecture, I will look for other products. Any suggestions?

The forward and back buttons are available for addition to the QAT in both Word 2007 and 2010. When you open the QAT customization dialogue, make sure you choose the 'Command not in Ribbon' or 'All Commands' option in the 'Choose commands from' dropdown.

Default Back And Forward Commands

My issue is not with Office 2007 or Office 2010. As I noted in my first reply I found the commands and could add them to my customizable took bar. The issue popped up when I found these commands are not in Office 2011 For Mac. I don't know if this is an issue only with the Mac or if this is a future direction with Office products in general.

Is Microsoft going to provide the Back and Forward commands in future Office products (including Office 2011 For Mac)? This is the issue.

Not having access to a Mac, I can't say what commands are or are not available for adding to the QAT - I simply described how to go about finding them. FWIW, the PC and Mac versions of Office have never had exactly the same feature set. You shouldn't take the omission of a feature from Office 2011 as an indication of the future for all Office versions; Office 2008, after all, didn't even support vba!

As to what MS or any other developer intends for the future, who knows? Be that as it may, even if the hyperlink buttons aren't available natively in Word 2011, it should be possible to create some and add them to the app along with the vba code to drive them. In all likelihood, the buttons are actually font characters in one of the Office font files.
