Default Options for updating MS Office 2016

Recently installed Windows 8.1 Pro. Just installed MS Office 2016 Pro Plus. I was looking at the Windows updates page and checked the box for "Update other MS Products". I figured it would start updating Office. Half way thru the bar, installation stopped and sat there for three hours. I rebooted and was told to wait as there were two updates to install. An hour later, it was still on its first update. Rebooted again. When Windows settled down, I ran Scannow for any damage. Nothing wrong. I unchecked the box for Other MS updates, ran updates again. This time (without Office) it updated, installed, rebooted all in 10 minutes.
So I'm guessing Office did not like the updates from Windows. Is there anyway from Office itself I can run updates? Bear with me if this is a stupid question. I've never used Office before. My son wanted it for College papers and I was hoping to learn how to use Excel.

If you do a Windows update without the 'Update other MS Products' option checked, that should get Windows itself fully updated. If you then run Windows update with the 'Update other MS Products' option checked, that should get Office updated.

By choosing the 'mark this thread as solved' option from the 'Thread Tools' dropdown. Done.
