why all of a sudden is office asking for creds. have had it for 2 yrs

windows vista office pro 2010 word. asking for user name and password for office.microsoft.com calls them credentials

You still haven't said which application (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc). Whichever one it is is probably trying to use a file that exists remotely. There is a range of possibilities. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019105/. It could be something as simple as having a USB stick connected to a router or, in Word, the application trying to contact the Office translator.
