Default Office 2010 won't save files

Office 2010 on XP laptop: worked fine since purchase last year until recently.

No Office progs will now save or allow renaming or deletion of files: "Can't save due to a file permission error" and similar messages.
Other programmes eg Paint, Notepad etc will save into the same folder no problem. Repaired, de-installed & re-installed Office. Installed all Office updates. No joy after a day's effort... End of tether here! Others seem to have this problem but not found the answer... any ideas out there?
