Use different mail merge list 'on the fly'
Hi all.
Just registered on the forum to ask for some help. I am not an expert with mail merge. I was wondering if there is any way as to dynamically open a merge word document but pass ot it a different filename of the mailing list. Perhaps by creating a 'special. Mail merge document that supports this, or even by command li e passing arguments. So for example if I created a mail merge document a.docx that reads from a text file data named t. Txt, is there a way I could open the merge document, passing to it a different text file as a list such as b.txt??? I am aiming to call the appropriate mail merge document and the 'correct' mailing list from an application in oracle forms 12. I know I.an get around this by creating the mail merge document to read from a static mailing list name, then through the application. To copy and rename the new mailing list to the location/name of the original mailing list but I would like to bear if there is a way to dynamically pass a different mailing list. Thank you, Giorkos |

No, that is not possible. What you envisage would require a macro in a document that is not a mailmerge main document.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have already 'worked around' this by changing all the mail merge documents to read the same path/file list.txt and I programmatically copy and rename proper source file from wherever its original location is to mailing_list.txt , but as I said changed merge documenfs to have mailing_list.txt as sour e. Of. Ihrse I make lots of checks along the way to make sure I do not provide a wrong mailing list document for a wrong client!! Thanks for the reply!! George |

I understood that much from your initial post. As I said, though, implementing a solution where you can choose a different data source each time requires VBA code that allows you to select the data source before the mailmerge SQL statement is executed - and you can't do that if the document has been saved as a mailmerge main document that is already connected to a datasource. Hence, the need for the approach I suggested.
