Default Unable to see names in merge since upgrading to Word 2016

I'm creating a thank-you letter by merging a .csv file with a template that contains merge fields. This worked fine with Word 2010 but for some reason I can no longer see the recipient names, addresses, etc when I create my merge file.

With Word 2010 somehow I had it configured to show the LAST_NAME, FIRST_NAME, etc fields, allowing me to deselect those recipients that I didn't want to send the letter to. OK, for now I leave them all selected and click Next>Write your letter>Preview. From here I can edit the recipient list, right? Wrong. Again I don't see names or addresses although my merge is OK

My data source is correct, and when I complete the merge, it looks good, so apparently my merge fields are OK. So how do I configure Word 2016 to show the merge fields so that I can deselect those names that I don't want in the final merge file?

There is nothing inherently different in Word 2016 that would cause this. I think I would be inclined to change the document type to normal word document. 'Save as' with the same name to update the document to Word 2016 compatible format then re-attach the data source. Does that now show the data?

Thank you. I'll give it a try. I needed to get that group of letters out so I found a
temporary workaround. After I download my .csv file from DonorPerfect, where I create it, I opened it in Excel and saved it as a genuine .xlsx file. Then for whatever reason I see the contents of my fields when I perform my merge.
