Default Time for a javascript thread

Is it time to have a javascript thread for those brave or stupid enough to dally with the javascript api for Word?

If you mean a javascript forum, I doubt it. In all the time this board has been running, only 24 threads (not including this one) have mentioned javascript. We've closed other forums with more threads than that.

No, not a thread on pure javascript but the javascript api for Office apps. To be used for writing Word add-ins etc. Based on my Googling it was introduced with Word 2013 but has had some serious upgrades over the past year.

I suspect there may be some interest in translating VBA to the equivalent javascript api calls for us amateur coders who are fed up of VBA running out of memory etc.

I'm having a look at it at the moment as my Christmas break activity but my brain is beginning to melt and dribble out of my ears. We have a VBA for Word forum so why not a javascript for Word (etc) forums(s).

That sounds more like a coding issue than a VBA issue per se.

Even for Word, there have only ever been 12 threads that mentioned javascript - and all of those only mention it in passing.

This is why I think a Word Javascript forum might be appropriate

As for my problems with VBA I have a set of macros that is focussed on manipulating styles. Any guidance you can give on how to minimise memory issues would be welcome.

We'd only create a forum here if there was enough traffic on a particular subject-matter to warrant it. As it is, to date we haven't had a single Word question asking anything about how something might be done using javascript - and that's half of all the threads in which javascript has even been mentioned. Although I haven't checked, I doubt there'd be more than a few mentions of javascript programming issues, if any, in the remaining threads. Likewise, due to a lack of traffic, we don't have separate forums for Exchange, InfoPath, Live Meeting, Lync (Communicator), SharePoint, Outlook VBA, or PowerPoint VBA - all of which there have been specific queries about.

I suspect its time will come. The javascript api is obviously still under development but I can envisage that VBA is slated for the chop if there is a credible alternative. Maybe not in the next version of Office, but soon after......

Maybe. Until then, there's no rush.

That would be news to Microsoft. And, even if it were to occur, we're still talking of something that might occur at least 5 years hence - and, if the history of WordBasic is anything to go by, VBA support would remain for at least two decades after that.
