trying to get whole numbers for currency
I am not very experienced at using Excel, and only use it for simple spreadsheets. I just updated to the new MS Office 2019 from the Mac 2011 version and have run into a problem that did not happen in my old version. My brother-in-law, who is very experienced in Excel, who just has purchased a new version of MS Office 365, does not have this problem and doesn't know how to solve it.
In entering values in my financial spreadsheet in the new version, I cannot get it to record the numbers, as currency, that I put in exactly as I put them in. I have gone into format in numbers and chose currency and no decimals. But when I enter a number in a cell, it automatically assumes that there is a decimal in the number, and then rounds it to the nearest number. For instance, if I type 78 into a cell (for $78), the bar above will record .78 and the cell will show $1 (rounding up from .78). I want to be able to enter a number (for currency) and have the cell show exactly what I entered - $78 if I typed in 78. I don't want to have to type $78.00 for all whole dollars. (I would also like it to show $78.50 if that is what I typed, but that is not the major problem, as I generally do not enter cents in my spreadsheet.). I'm sure that this is a setting somewhere, but I have searched and not found it. thank you for any suggestions or solutions Nancy |

Click File, then Options, then Advanced, remove the tick at 'Automatically insert a decimal point', OK.

I do not have "Options" under my File menu. I could list what I do have, but none of the choices is Options.

Pardon me.
Only now I see that you use Mac, and I have absolutely no knowledge of that. What I wrote in #2 works for me (Windows 10 and Office 365). |

Thank for trying anyway. About 5 minutes ago, I found the solution - by searching through every menu, etc. Under Preferences, Edit, Edit Options, Display this number of decimals left unchecked. Then I seems that I can put in as decimal if I want ($78.59), but if I don't then I can get $78 and not the .78 rounding to 1. It seems to me somewhat counterintuitive to have to set number of decimals under both Preferences and Format/number, but I guess if I have it way I want it, it's good.
Thanks again, Nancy |
