Default Excel freezing large data sets

Hi,

This issue is currently only present with one of my computers so it makes me believe it is a driver issue.

I have a large excel file with a large set of data e.g. 50 000 rows. This issues happens when I start scrolling down and the data will stop loading and show a blank/grey screen. The mouse updates e.g. shows blinking typing line, cell selection etc but excel is not responsive. It feels like its working but the screen is not updating/registering changes. The only way to fix this is close (still gives the option to save etc) and reopen. Problem will occur again when i scroll up or down the lines.

I've done a fresh install of windows, reinstall of office and disabling hardware acceleration. I have a feeling its GPU drivers/memory or a resolution issue (This only happens on this computer 1440p resolution).

Here are a few links of the same issue but no solution.

Just adding my 2 cents.

Is the 1440P computer cpu slower and have less memory. 50K lines is a fair amount, but I work with 70K lines often. Unless I am trying to do many calculations and intense cpu resources, I do not have this problem and I do, it usually not lock up (might be delayed). I have had it lock up, but I realize that I had a lot of other programs running at the same time and I have closed the other programs.

To me it sounds like you have the computer optimized. One question is when this happens, what is going on in the task manager? Is the CPU, hard drive, etc. maxed? It would be interesting to see how it is killing the system.

For me, I would think that it is a memory issue, but yes drivers could be causing the issue. I have had issues with drivers causing odd things on my system (not with excel) and yes you can call me lazy, I use 2-3 different driver updater programs. Why so many? It is more of a matter making sure I have the latest driver for everything (sound, video, etc.) and I find each program to be better in certain areas on getting updates. I just use the free programs.

I know this post is a lot of questions and comments, but I wanted to give you my 2 cents.

Hi Radical,

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I still have not been able to pin point the cause of the issue.

The 1440p laptop is actually my better laptop with an i7 8550u 16GB ram vs my work laptop with an i5 6200u 8GB ram (which has no issues with the file).

I think its a driver optimisation issue with either the resolution or trackpad(?). It appears to only happen when I use the trackpad (two finger swipe) to scroll - even if i leave the file open for 5 minutes to 'load', the use of the trackpad makes excel non-responsive. My work around is to scroll down the sheet from top to bottom slowly by holding and dragging the side tab (I do this straight away when opening the file) - after doing this I can use the trackpad to scroll with no issues.

Its a strange one...and all my drivers are up to date
