=SUMIFS(P7:P18,P6,Q7:Q18)
worked! thanks! I don't know why I was hung up on SUMPRODUCT! edit: corrected the formula |

SUMIFS is the new version of SUMPRODUCT ( but it is not a flexible)
In this case SUMIF ( without the trailing "s" would have sufficed)
