Hello, I have Office 2010 and since 2 days I cannot open *.xlsx files by double clicking on them. My system always tries to open them with Excel 2016 which I don't have and then redirects me to a page where I can buy Excel 2016. I tried to change the default program to open the files with but I am unable to find Excel 2010 on my Windows 10 system.


I can, however, open Excel 2010 via the desktop shortcut and then open the files within Excel 2010. How can I change the default settings and simply open the files directly with Excel 2010 as before?

Rigth click on your Excel link on the desktop, select properties, that sould show you were excel is located.

Hi, Thats also what I thought an tried. But it tells me that Excel is on the desktop. When I right click on a file and want to select Excel from the desktop and say open with this program I get an error message with "Catastrophic Failure". What else could I do?

Perhaps lookup on the net a way to get rid of any references to 2016 on your computer ( this might involve tweaking the registry so backups might be needed)
Then uninstall completely XL2010 and any programs related to 2016 you have on the PC via the Control Panel - reboot and re-install XL2010
Also backup all your files just in case

After uninstalling any Office 2016 components that have found there way onto the system, all that should be required is a repair of Office 2010 (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office 2010 > Change > Repair).
