Locking cells
I am wanting to lock a cell. I asked for help and got an answer, I followed the direction that I got, but when I try to lock a cell it seems as though it did not work. I can still change what is in the cell. Do you have to protect the whole sheet for it to work? If I protect the sheet does this keep a person from entering anything in unprotected cells? Can I lock a cell by itself?
Thank you for your time. Melvin1942 |

Do you need to lock the cells before you protect the sheet, or protect the sheet and then lock the cells?

Step 2: Protect sheet (when you want for users restrict removing protection, then with password - but don't then forget it). |

What I want to be able to do is lock a cell so it cannot be changed and still be able to work in unlocked cells. What good is it if you lock a cell and cannot work in a unlocked cell because the sheet is protected? If you do not protect the sheet than you can also work in what should be locked cells. If this cannot be done then Microsoft should fix it so you can.

By default all cells are locked, so when you protect the sheet without changing formatting, you can't change anything on this sheet. Likely your course of action must be: 1. Unprotect the worksheet (in case it is protected currently); 2. Select entire worksheet (click on rectangle at top left on sheet); 3. Set all cells on worksheet unprotected (Format Cells: uncheck Locked); 4. Select cell/range of cells you want to restrict user changes for; 5. Set cell/range of cells protected (Format Cells: check Locked); 6. Repeat 5. - 6. until you have set protection for all cells you need to be protected; 7. Protect the worksheet. In case you need to change previously formatted locking on worksheet, where you want most of worksheet locked, and only some cells unlocked, the order of seting Locked/Unlocked will be reverse. |
