£16.90 + £0.99 = £17.89 doesn't it?
I've added the sample spreadsheet as an attachment Last edited by tracyj; 11-28-2016 at 06:49 AM. Reason: layout of table |

Sorry, I don't know if my original post showed up.
I'm having a problem with a IF function which is showing up a "check" result when it shouldn't. The formula is =IF(A3-SUM(B3:C3)=0,"-","check") But when I put 17.89 in column A, £16.90 in column B and £0.99 in column C is gives the result "check" instead of "-" It works ok with other numbers so what am I doing wrong?? |

Try
=IF(ROUND(A3-SUM(B3:C3),2)=0,"-","check") Change 2 to the precision you want. The problem is the way that Excel represents values internally: 64-bit-binary floating-point. Values are represented by the sum of 53 consecutive powers of 2 ("bits") times an exponential factor. Consequently, most decimal fractions cannot be represented exactly. If you really want to study this, see: http://faculty.tarleton.edu/agapie/d...atingPoint.pdf |
