Default counting cells to the right of criteria

What I would like to do is count the number of cells that are greater than zero in a column that fits criteria in the column to it's left. I.E. in column A; I have 1st to 4th Quarters for all club members, In column B; I have the dues they paid in each quarter. I would like a count of the number of cells that are more than zero for each member in the 1st quarter etc

Perhaps a Pivot Table might fit your needs?

I don't know anything at all about a pivot function but I did google it and I don't think that it would fit my need; I was thinking more of a combination of the IF and count functions, if that is at all possible. I have a basic knowledge of spreadsheets, all self taught and mostly figure things out by trial and error.
