Excel Spreadsheet shows as 'Read Only'
Hi,
On numerous occasions when I create a new spreadsheet it crashes. When I force shut down the PC and reboot it, then open the spreadsheet, it says that I it's 'Read Only.' Can you please advise me as to why this is the case, as the permissions are not set up that way. Thanks in advance for any light that can be shed on this issue. |

That suggests a problem with your Office installation. the most likely reason for the 'read-only' status is that the original instance of Excel is still running in the background and still has the file open.
You can repair the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change).

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your suggestion however that doesn't seem like the problem, unless you are suggesting that a number of people in the office have a problem with their Office installation. I tried to access the files from various computers and via various users but the results were the same... the file could be opened as 'read only' and not in an editable mode. Any other suggestions? If Excel crashes on your PC with a file open, but remains running in the background with the file open, then anyone who tries to access that file will only be able to open it as 'read only' until you kill your Excel session. You can do the latter by logging off or by killing the Excel process in the Windows Task Manager.

Thanks Paul for your response! I was just wondering if you could think of any possible reasons why the crash keeps occurring.

I already suggested that in post #2 - a fault in your Office installation.
