Default Edit Links hangs up computer

Have two massive files that I've linked together and have been using for years. Want to change source for the links to a new filename. Have done this many many times before and it goes smoothly and quickly. Now, after clicking on the new source and OK, the links start to update very slowly and then everything freezes. I get the Edit Link box pop up with nothing in it and then it goes away and then it comes back again, over and over. Cannot quit Excel and cannot even Shut Down my computer. Just hangs up. I then need to unplug my computer and then reboot. Problem is not just with these two massive files, but all other unrelated files that are also linked. I've tried several times and Edit Links does this same thing, regardless of the files.
Any help here??

thanks in advance.
