Hi,

Select the cells you wish to format.
Select: Format>Cells>Number
Uncheck the "Use thousand separator" box

Default commas redux

Hi Zade
thanks for the reply, but, I don't want to get rid of the commas... I want tham to actually separate thousands...
currently it looks like this, no matter what I try:
2,22,222.22
when what I want is a real number:
222,222.22

can you help with that?
thanks for your time

pete

Default Excel Number Formatting

Hi Pete,

I think there are possibly two things you need to check to solve your problem:

First of all, check the Regional Settings on your Windows control panel.

Start>Settings>Control Panel and Double Click the Regional & Language & Options.

Click Customize and change the Digit Grouping Symbol to a comma. (I think the default is a space, but yours may be different to mine as I have mine set up for Russian and English). Click OK and OK again to save the settings.

Next, Start Excel and enter a few number values into some cells. eg
A1 1
A2 10
A3 100
A4 1000
A5 10000
A6 100000
A7 1000000

Now select the cells that you have just populated and from the menu bar select Format > Cells > Number and ensure that you check the Use 1000 Separator box.

This should solve your problem.

If any part is unclear, please let me know and I can send you some detailed screenshots.

Kind regards,

"Zade" :-)
