Default I Want Pictures Where *I* Want, Not Where Word Wants!

I just want to put images into a Word document and for them to go where I drag them, not go firing off and appearing on different pages. I've tried dragging the anchor but when I release it, it goes and hides on a different part of the page or a different page altogether.

I also want the pictures to have a border with a text label underneath (but still inside the border). I've tried text boxes but the picture turns pure white when I try and put it inside. If I put it over the top of the box it mostly works but the last picture I added wouldn't go anywhere near it. I've tried tables but those little bastards won't behave either. If I even look at the picture wrong the table collapses so it's only as big as the text and the picture hangs out the bottom with the text hiding behind it.

I can't find a solution online, what the hell do I do? I've been struggling with this problem since last century!

Rather than dragging the images into a Word document have you tried to use the INSERT ribbon to insert a PICTURE?

To place text below the picture, try using the REFERENCES ribbon to INSERT a CAPTION....OR, right-click on the image and select INSERT CAPTION.

For the image Border, left-click on the image then from the Picture Tools FORMAT ribbon, click on the PICTURE BORDER drop-down option of the Picture Styles section of the ribbon.

Hope this helps...

I was often using INSERT, the trouble often starts when I try dragging the image later on. Maybe it was images that I'd INSTERTed that were less trouble.

As for the other ideas, thank you, but the trouble now is that I can't get the width of the CAPTION box to match the width of the BORDER!

Maybe you should check your image insertion format defaults - see under File|Options|Advanced>Cut, Copy, Paste>Insert/paste pictures as. The 'inline with text' option will drop them where you have the insertion point or release the cursor when dragging.

Sorry, those instructions were for the PC version. On a Mac, the equivalent of Options is Preferences. Some of the names under that, too, may differ.

Only all of them! After lots of digging around I finally found it. Thank you!

When I move an image up or down it moves the associated text up or down with it. However, after moving the picture down a few steps (about 5) the text will jump back up to the initial position. Is it possible to stop this happening so I can move the image up and down without the text moving up and down with it? (I have text wrapping on)
You can see it happening here:

The wrapped image in your screenshots is anchored to the 'DISADVANTAGES' heading. Because the image is wrapped, the text will reflow around it as you move the image about on the page. Somehow I doubt you'd want the text to stay put and be obscured by the image or vice-versa. Still, if that's what you want, try changing the wrap format to 'in front of text' or 'behind text'.

You're right, I don't want anything obscured!
If I anchor the image to one of the paragraphs it all behaves in exactly the same way, though. I'm fine with the text flowing around the image as it moves up and down, that's why it's wrapped, but I want the DISADVANTAGES heading and the top line of the next paragraph to stay still on the vertical axis.

Presumably you mean you want the 'DISADVANTAGES' heading to retain the standard spacing after the 'replacement parts shouldn't be necessary' text, as per the 1st & 3rd screenshots. What I can't figure out, though, is what you've done that's causing the 'DISADVANTAGES' heading to move. . Can you attach that page from your document to a post (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Exactly! It's easy to understand when the correct terminology is used

As counter-intuitive as it seems, the problem is caused by your 'DISADVANTAGES' heading paragraph having the 'keep lines together' attribute set.

PS: I note you now have the anchor locked to a different paragraph.

Fantastic! That's fixed it! Thank you!

>> PS: I note you now have the anchor locked to a different paragraph.

That's because you mentioned the image being anchored to the heading, so I anchored somewhere else to check that wasn't the cause.
