Insert caption to graphic with square text wrapping
I thought I has this problem solved. After more searching, I understand WORD 2013 has a problem when inserting a caption to any graphic that doesn't have an "In line with text" layout. It doesn't want to associate the caption with the graphic - or something like that. The only solution I have seen, is to put the graphic "In line with text" and the caption in a text box together. Is there an easier solution? This doesn't seem practical. Am I doing something wrong? I am using WORD 2013.

just an observation … on the rare occasions I have to anything with graphics in Word, I use two paragraph styles: the first one :fig is where I insert the graphic, or the link if I'm feeling reckless, and the second one :figcap is where I add the caption. :fig is set to keep with next. Lists of figures use the ToC mechanism and the :figcap style.
Whether this will help you with the wrapping I can't say – perhaps yes, by separating questions of graphic layout from the use of a caption. On the other hand, it might be completely against your habits … Oh, and I'm assuming (since you mention captions) we're considering standalone graphics each with its own caption. |

It has to be remembered that captions are not really associated with a graphic. Captions simply use a Caption style. There is no real connection by default. If you move the graphic (say Fig3) to after graphic (Fig61), the Caption ("Figure 3") does NOT move with it. Unless YOU move it. The Caption stays right where it was.

Thank you for all your help.
"How to add a caption to a picture that does not use the "In line with text" wrapping style option for pictures in a Word or Mac document." Is the description of my problem. Here is a link to the article.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894029 The cross reverence "works," but it selects the caption textbox. I just want it to go to the caption; without revealing the textbox. I must be doing something wrong; because I can't get the results in the article. |

What do you mean by "revealing the text box"?

If I have my graphic as "In line with text" layout, the caption inserts ,as text, beautifully right under the graphic - just as I want. The cross-reference hyperlink goes directly to the caption. If I change my graphic to "square text wrapping" layout, the caption gets inserted in a text box. The cross-reference hyperlink goes to the caption, but the dotted text-box outline that the caption is in is also displayed - as if it was waiting to be edited. I want the square text wrapping and the cross-reference to go to caption without displaying the text-box that the caption is in. I may have a setting wrong?

That's because you had the picture selected when inserting the caption. For Word to align the caption with the picture, it has to put the caption in a textbox. If you didn't have the picture selected, the caption would be inserted just the same as for an in-line picture - but then you might have issues getting the alignment & association of the two correct.
