Personally, if I had a more-or-less formatted Word document that had to be translated I'd extract all the text to a real plain-text .txt file and send it to the translator. When the translation came back, I'd copy/paste it back into the .doc/.docx myself. If the translation involved a language I couldn't read, I'd manually add a number to each paragraph.
